Account segmentation is the practice of grouping target accounts and prospects by shared attributes so sales and marketing teams know where to spend their time. Common attributes include firmographics (industry, company size, region), technographics (the software an account already uses), buying behavior or intent signals, and revenue potential. Teams then rank segments into tiers, such as Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3, and assign coverage to match.
In sales planning and go-to-market planning, segmentation is the input for territory design, quota setting, and capacity planning. It determines how many reps each segment needs and where account-based marketing (ABM) programs should focus. RevOps teams often own the segmentation model and refresh it as account data changes.
Segmentation also gives sales, marketing, and finance a shared view of where to invest. Tiering accounts by customer lifetime value instead of current deal size, for example, can shift coverage toward accounts with more expansion potential. Because quotas and headcount plans depend on the segments, segmentation choices flow directly into the bookings forecast and the financial plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between account segmentation and lead segmentation?
Account segmentation groups companies by fit and buying readiness, while lead segmentation groups the individual contacts within those accounts. Teams usually segment accounts first to decide where to sell, then segment leads to decide whom to engage.
How does account segmentation relate to territory planning?
Account segmentation defines which accounts belong in each tier, and territory planning distributes those tiered accounts across reps so each territory has balanced opportunity. Changing segment definitions usually means rebalancing territories and quotas.
What criteria are commonly used for account segmentation?
Common criteria include firmographics such as industry, employee count, and region, plus technographics, intent or engagement signals, and estimated revenue potential. Many teams combine these criteria into a fit score and use it to assign tiers.
