Definition

Audit compliance is an organization's adherence to the requirements auditors test against: accurate financial records, documented and effective internal controls, and evidence that teams followed procedures. For US public companies, the main framework is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX).

SOX Section 404 requires management to assess internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) every year. Section 404(b) adds an external auditor attestation for accelerated and large accelerated filers. Most companies evaluate their controls against the COSO internal control framework, and auditors check that each control is well designed and operating effectively.

For finance teams, audit compliance is an ongoing program, and the audit is the periodic evaluation of it. Every adjustment and approval in your budgets, forecasts, and close needs a clear audit trail. Reported figures are only as reliable as the finance data governance behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between audit compliance and SOX compliance?

SOX compliance is one form of audit compliance: it covers the internal control and reporting requirements the Sarbanes-Oxley Act sets for US public companies. Audit compliance is the broader term for meeting whatever requirements an organization's auditors test against.

How is audit compliance different from audit readiness?

Audit compliance means meeting control and reporting requirements on an ongoing basis. Audit readiness means having the evidence and documentation organized so auditors can test that compliance when an audit begins.

How does audit compliance relate to internal and external audits?

Internal audit is a company's own review of its controls. An external audit is an independent firm's evaluation, including the Section 404(b) attestation where it applies. Audit compliance is the condition both reviews test.
