Definition

Autonomous planning is an operating model in which AI agents initiate, run, and adapt planning and analysis work based on real-time data. Finance teams keep accountability and decision authority. The model builds on agentic AI, where software pursues a goal across multiple steps with minimal prompting.

In FP&A, autonomous planning moves teams from calendar-driven cycles to event-driven planning. When agents detect a business signal, such as margin erosion or a demand shift, they refresh forecasts, run variance analysis, and model scenarios. Agents then prepare the output for human review, so the plan works as a form of continuous planning that updates as the business changes.

Autonomous planning goes further than AI-assisted planning and augmented planning, where people start the work and AI supports it. It depends on governed data, connected models, and guardrails that define when people must approve a change. Teams need to see what an agent changed and why before they act on its output.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does autonomous planning differ from AI-assisted and augmented planning?

In AI-assisted and augmented planning, people start the work and AI supports it with answers, analysis, or recommendations. In autonomous planning, AI agents start and run the work when business signals change, then hand the output to people for review.

Does autonomous planning remove humans from the planning process?

No. Agents handle monitoring, forecast refreshes, and analysis, while finance teams keep accountability, apply judgment, and approve the decisions that follow.

What does a business need in place before adopting autonomous planning?

It needs governed data, connected planning models, and guardrails that define what agents can change and when people must approve. Without them, teams can't trace or explain an agent's output, so they can't rely on it.
