Definition

Production capacity is the maximum output a plant, production line, machine, or team can produce in a given period with its existing resources. It equals available production time divided by cycle time per unit. For example, one machine that makes 20 units per hour over an 8-hour shift has a capacity of 160 units per shift.

Capacity sets the ceiling on what operations can deliver, so it feeds supply planning, sales and operations planning (S&OP), and capital expenditure decisions. Most plans use effective capacity, which accounts for planned downtime, maintenance, and changeovers. That makes it a more realistic input for capacity planning and FP&A forecasts.

Running above capacity requires extra shifts or overtime, which raises average costs, and sustained utilization above 90–95% wears equipment and reduces responsiveness. Low utilization spreads fixed costs over fewer units, which raises unit cost and cost of goods sold (COGS).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is production capacity different from capacity utilization?

Production capacity is the maximum output possible in a period, while capacity utilization is the share of that capacity actually in use. Utilization equals (actual output ÷ production capacity) × 100, and about 85% is a common target.

How do you calculate production capacity?

Production capacity = available production time ÷ cycle time per unit. To get effective capacity, first subtract planned downtime, maintenance, and changeovers from available time.

How does production capacity connect to capacity planning?

Production capacity is the input, and capacity planning matches it to forecast demand over time. The gap between capacity and demand tells planners whether to add shifts or invest in new equipment.
