Definition
Sustainability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are quantifiable metrics used to track and measure an organization's performance against its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. These indicators translate broad sustainability objectives, such as reducing carbon footprint or improving workplace diversity, into specific, measurable targets. They cover a wide range of areas including energy consumption, water usage, waste management, employee health and safety, supply chain labor standards, and board diversity.
These KPIs are critical for both internal decision-making and external reporting. Internally, they inform strategic planning, guide operational improvements, and are integrated into risk modeling to identify potential ESG-related liabilities. Externally, they form the basis of sustainability reports and disclosures required by regulatory bodies and demanded by investors who increasingly use ESG data to evaluate long-term company value and resilience.
Integrating sustainability metrics into a unified platform alongside financial data allows for a more holistic view of enterprise performance. This approach ensures that non-financial performance is considered in financial forecasting and that management reporting reflects a comprehensive picture of the organization's health and long-term viability.
