Definition

Constrained planning is building a plan that respects real resource limits, such as production capacity, materials, labor, budget, and cash. An unconstrained plan assumes all demand can be met. A constrained plan shows what the business can actually deliver with what it has.

Teams usually build an unconstrained demand plan first, then apply constraints through supply planning and capacity planning. The gap between the 2 plans is the shortfall to resolve. In S&OP and integrated business planning (IBP), that gap drives trade-offs: adding capacity, allocating scarce supply, or pushing out deliveries.

A constrained plan is realistic and executable. It exposes bottlenecks early, which makes customer commitments and financial forecasts more reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between constrained and unconstrained planning?

Unconstrained planning shows the demand a business would serve with unlimited resources. Constrained planning shows what it can deliver within its actual limits, and the gap between the 2 is the shortfall to resolve.

What constraints does constrained planning model?

Supply chain teams usually model production capacity, materials, and labor, while finance teams model budget caps, headcount limits, and cash. Teams often test how a plan changes under different limits with scenario planning.

How does constrained planning fit into S&OP and IBP?

It's the step where the demand plan meets supply reality. In S&OP and IBP, leaders review the gap between the unconstrained and constrained plans, agree on trade-offs, and commit to one executable plan.
